Partners in Sustainable Development

At Anglo American, we are committed to the development of the communities in the countries where we operate. Our initiatives have helped bolster the community’s production development, education, and health. We have also promoted job creation and helped fuel regional economic growth by training businesspeople and making local procurements.

Dialogue and Commitment to the Public

In Peru, where we operate Quellaveco, we have carried out a process that has earned accolades from the national and international community. In mid-2012, we completed the Dialogue Table with the Moquegua region, after establishing 26 commitments for water management, environmental care, and social responsibility.

These agreements represent more than 1 billion soles that Anglo American will invest in the development of the Moquegua region. This money will be delivered during the different stages of the Quellaveco mining project via the Fondo de Desarrollo de Moquegua.

To supervise the compliance with these agreements, we set up the Agreement Monitoring and Oversight Committee, of which we form part, together with regional and municipal authorities, community representatives, and civil society.

Local Job Creation

At Anglo American, we strive to make sure men women have equal job opportunities at Quellaveco. The project’s presence in the Moquegua region also drives the creation of new jobs in other economic sectors such as commerce, services, transportation, and even tourism, thus helping to fulfil our commitments to the region.

Contribution to the Local Economy

Since 2010, Anglo American has implemented a number of training and technical consulting programs for businesspeople and entrepreneurs in Moquegua.

There are many local suppliers who have also been included in our supply chain. Since 2013, the project has procured over US$ 125 million in goods and services from local companies, including community partnerships and business networks.

Anglo American Information Centers

Anglo American has created three information centers, located in Moquegua, Torata, and Ilo, in order to facilitate dialogue with local residents.

The information centers have become permanent spaces where the public can learn about the Quellaveco project, as well as acting as promoters of local culture. In 2017 alone, over 70,000 people visited our information centers in the Moquegua region and took part in the free activities we offer.
